Thanks for the info. I was considering getting some programming software for the VX, but after looking thru the frequencies listed in the timetable for my area I realized there were only about 20 or 30 frequencies that I'd need, even accounting for any travelling I normally do.
I decided not to go ahead and just load all the AAR frequencies since I probably wouldn't need the vast majority. Yeah, it's a bit tedious to program the names, and the VX is a pain to program, but once you get the hang of it you can knock them out pretty quick. I figured it would probably take me almost as much time to order, load software and get everything set up and connected.
I also figured I wouldn't need to do much changing once they were programmed, though in the end I did go thru later and rename a bunch of frequencies once I settled on a standard naming practice. And as I sort and arrange memory channels into banks, which seem to change as I decide which channels I'll need at different locations, the thought of having software to do it seems pretty nice.
Just my 2 cents The software is very handy when you want to reprogram a radio for a trip, and then program it again when you return. Of course, with the limited capabilities of a VHF only radio you won't do nearly as much programming as you would do with a full featured scanner. One of the problems with the ham radio programming software is that the programs are generally model specific.
Some of the programs will do a couple of radios the VX software will also do the VX , but as a rule you have to get new software when you get a new model of radio. There are scanner programs such as Scan Cat Lite that will program a multitude of scanners from different companies using one program, but this concept is unknown in the ham community. Many ham radios and scanners can be cloned, if you have the correct cable.
Some radios will clone by radio instead of using a cable. When you clone a radio, the master radio sets the settings of the slave radio so that the settings are identical.
This can be handy if several friends with the same interests have the same radio; you program one radio correctly and clone the rest. Note that if you modify the radio for transmitting out of the ham bands it may not clone to or from an unmodified radio.
As with all ham radio accessories from the manufacturer you will get sticker shock when you price the cable but you can always build your own if it uses standard connectors.
I have the VX and my wife bought me the programming software for Christmas. My experience, however, is very different. I'm not doubting what you wrote, but wanted to share my experience. My software came with both cables that you mention. My software worked out of the box, no other patches or downloads required. Now I did already have the AAR channels programmed.
This was very easy once I reset the step to 15 so that the radio automatically increased the frequency by. Sorry, it's been a while since I had done that and I can't locate my manual at the moment. Anyway, I wanted the software primarily to easily program the banks.
It has been wonderful for that. On a recent trip to St. Louis, I programmed several areas into their own banks so that I would just be hearing what I wanted to.
When I got back home, I could easily reload my home settings. It's been extremely helpful software and I have used it to add other area channels emergency management, etc. Mark, thank you for your reply. CD has picture of VX on it.
