This build does not add any new fixes to the game however. It simply fixes some minor issues with the exe that applies the patch to the game. You no longer need to run from the windows command prompt. I actually built this version of the patch back in however never released it.
Posted by Lord Brazen at Saturday, May 22, [ 5 comments ]. For those that enjoy games that are focused on tactics, strategy, and diplomacy, Master of Orion II is a good place to start. Whether in the thick of battle or viewing a cut scene, the visuals were pretty impressive for its day.
The basic premises of the game are to create an empire, develop technology, and eventually build an invasion fleet against rivals who are seeking to do the same. Master of Orion II offers game play against up to 7 opponents. The game has excellent multiplayer support with hot seat, modem, serial link, and LAN games. You can choose any combination of human or AI opponents.
There are thirteen standard races to choose from but most veteran players design a custom race. There is a large array of race customization options available allowing players to customize their race to match their playing style In fact, you still get to play with all of the features you had in the original!
The only difference you'll find is that there is now more of everything making this a very enjoyable game. They even eliminated the number one complaint about the original MOO, by including multi-player play and once you've trounced the computer players a few times, you'll relish the idea of trouncing your best friends. The only place the game seems somewhat lacking is in the diplomacy system.
In the original MOO, diplomacy and trading were viable strategies for winning. You could, if lucky and skilled, go an entire game with very little combat; building your economic might through trade and expansion, and becoming more and more popular on a galactic level.
This seems to be next to impossible in MOO2. While the diplomatic interface now sports more options and features, the AI no longer seems to favor this sort of player. So, with almost entirely positive comments, why do I rate this game lower than the original?
Because in the end, while an excellent game, it just lacks that particular oomph the original had. Perhaps, being a sequel, it couldn't have the same impact as being something completely new.
Never the less, MOO2 is a great game, guaranteed to provide many hours of entertainment. Editors Note: After the initial release of this game, several patches were created for it and made available to users. The most recent patch which updates the game to version 1. The patch also improves the balance of racial characteristics, allows players to name and save their custom races, and fixes several minor programming bugs.
Sound: Sound is much more prevalent than in the original and nicely augments the gaming experience. As a result, the base Psilon race loses Artifact home world and gains Large home world. The Custom Race option is available on all difficulty levels. Extra combat turns given by the Time Warp Facilitator will be given after the opponent has taken a turn. They land their marines, but do not return to the launching ship. Bug Fixes Modem problems with head-to-head play have been addressed.
An option for the fast refit of ships has been added. The lockup when all the ships on one side are in stasis is corrected. Ships will now be able to reach Elite crew status. Ships in stasis will not take damage from ship explosions. Human players may now give Antaran technology to each other. If your income is negative and you are giving tribute to another player, you give them zero BCs instead of a negative amount of BCs. Leaders give their special technology when hired, even if hired on a later turn.
The player will now benefit from Loknar's Galactic Lore skill. It used to be possible to circumvent the 5-turn ETA by sending the leader to the pool and then back to the same star system.
This has been fixed. Scrapping captured ships now gives you the opportunity to learn improved fuel cell technology. You can now able to hire "special" leaders. Asteroids were added to the Colony system display. The Tiny planetary shield crash bug is fixed. Graphical problems with planetary shields have been fixed. The Colony Building Queue screen is changed to list the planet name.
